I SOMETIMES wonder what it would be like to work as a keeper on a big shoot with a big budget and simply be able to pick up the phone and order whatever equipment was needed secure in the knowledge that someone else would be paying for it.

I POSED the question in this column last August as to how many 20-gauge shotguns were likely to be out on the moors for the opening day of the grouse shooting season. Of course, this is impossible to calculate without a costly and time-consuming survey which would really serve no purpose.

CHRISTIE’S sale of exceptional and fine sporting guns, held on Wednesday November 14, included a .375 H&H double-barrelled sidelock ejector rifle by Joseph Lang & Sons. This had originally been built by Lang in 1923 as a .280 calibre and later re-barrelled by an unknown maker as a .375 calibre.
