AS I sit and write this the snow has gone from around here and most of the country is thawing fast. I took 'Fly' for a walk along the canal yesterday in the hope of being able to cast a fly for the pike that reside in the arm that no longer sees boat traffic.

TODAY it is not unusual to find a lady stalking deer in the Highlands and islands of Scotland. One hundred years ago, few members of the fairer sex dared to go out on the hill in pursuit of stags and hinds, and those who did were invariably great characters who were held in awe by sportsmen and their gamekeepers.

TEN months had passed since I’d last occupied this hide. It was last January when David Wilcox and me, at the invitation of Vince Raw, intercepted duck and woodcock on Vince’s flight pond in the Scottish borders of Dumfries & Galloway.

WE left the low ground in typical winter weather and made for the hills with enough layers of clothing to keep a dozen folk warm, making our way through snowdrifts as high as the motor.
