DESPITE the lack of quail in Santiago Tianguistengo, meadow larks and striped sparrows were abundant and we enjoyed several hours of fast and furious sport. Once a potential quarry item had been spotted the three Aplomado Falcons were encouraged to fly round as we rushed forward and attempted to flush it for them to chase.

Do we need to repeal the hunting ban?

Posted by on Friday, 25th of June 2010 •

IT may seem rather self-congratulatory but having returned a fortnight ago from a week’s holiday in Corfu to discover that southern England had endured torrential rain and gales whilst I was abroad did seem to carry the smack of perfect timing.

A hunting knife for all occasions

Posted by on Friday, 25th of June 2010 •

I HAD my first penknife when I was ten years of age, a very basic type which cost half-a-crown (22½p). I soon recognised its multitude of uses and have never been without one since. It served me faithfully throughout my schooldays when virtually every pupil possessed one and I cannot recall a single incident of misuse. Times have changed, though, and knives of any description have become a pariah in this age of political correctness, regardless of the role which they play.

Accomplished taxidermists have plenty of work

Posted by on Wednesday, 5th of May 2010 •

FOR decades taxidermy, looked down upon as an out of date fusty relic of the Victorian age, is once again on a roll due to some extent to the application of modern technology and equipment, both of which have completely transformed this ancient art.

2008 did not exactly get off to a good start! I have long given up making New Year resolutions. Circumstances and situations change, and whilst good intentions are not exactly broken, they do not always work out as one intends. Far better, I am sure, to reflect upon any mistakes made during the previous 12 months and ensure that they are not repeated.

Green politicians under attack for anti fieldsport behaviour

Posted by on Wednesday, 3rd of March 2010 •

ANOTHER game shooting season has ended and, in the Republic, that also includes the humble pigeon as it has been added to the game list – as usual while we weren’t watching!

A GENUINE COUNTRYMAN WHO COULD FRONT COUNTRYSPORTS’ TV

Posted by on Thursday, 29th of October 2009 •

IT has long been recognised that BBC Television, despite its never ending protestations of impartiality, is dominated by a politically correct hierarchy. It seems they are happy to encourage the likes of Bill Oddie with his wildlife ramblings but will not stomach Clarissa Dickson-Wright, who hunts, or Johnny Kingdom who also supports hunting.

A GOOD GUN OIL OR BORE SOLVENT- This is essential for your firearm

SEPTEMBER has offered the best chance of seeing some summer weather in recent years and many will be hoping for an Indian Summer after the serious flooding in Ireland that has had disastrous consequences for farming and game life.
